In March 2010, a messaging app named Kakao Talk (카카오톡) released for smart phone users that hold the operating systems of Android, IOS, Windows Phones, Watch OS and Wear OS. Kakao Talk is quite prominent in South Korea, as 93% of South Koreas phone holders are in active use with the app. Although this is primarily an app focused on the Korean community, in 2013 alone, there were 50.62 million monthly active users WORLD WIDE, as compared to now with around 53 million monthly users globally. After reading all of that information, can you tell it is a pretty prominent addition to modern day Korean culture? I hope so because not only does it create use for messaging and connecting in South Korea, there are also many benefits to this app that a lot of users aren't aware of like e commerce, music and finance features! A feature that I recommend for my friends who would like to take a trip to South Korea is Kakao T, which is what I would consider an affiliate to Kakao Talk. This app can only be used for those who have a Kakao Talk account so keep that in mind! It makes traveling easy and offers the passenger a fast and easy way to find transport near you. Although all of this sounds fine and dandy, there can be downsides to apps such as this one and Ill describe my personal opinion about this frankly. Toxicity. It. Is. Everywhere....although that shouldn't be much of a surprise since it is, you know, a part of the internet. Due to the amount of users you come across on this app, the likelihood that you will bump into some toxicity is pretty high so keep that in mind and remember to protect your peace (and your identity)! Thankfully I finally, after years of searching for an unproblematic Kakao Talk group chat, I found one. I found the right group of people that not only supported my being as a whole, but the group chat also provided me with amazing info on K-Pop groups , C-Pop groups, Korean culture, East Asian culture in its entirety and traveling advice BUT most importantly, friendship. If any of my current Kakao Talk friends are reading this, thank you. Thank you all for being the excellent and wonderful people you are and if I haven't had a chance to meet you yet IRL, the day will come! What do you think of Kakao Talk? Have you used it to make friends and if so how much of an impression have those friendships made on your current life? Let me know by adding your comments in the Comment section below. Thanks for reading!
